CHAPTER 12

Marco Allen stepped out of his Mustang and headed for his ex-girlfriend’s front door. His partner remained in the front passenger’s seat and was enjoying something on the mp3 system.

Marco rang the doorbell.

Elaine was hesitant but didn’t have much of a choice. She glanced back at her son on the sofa then slowly unlocked her front door.

When the door was opened, Marco said to Elaine, “What the hell is so important about my son that you couldn’t talk about over the damn phone? You up to some bullshit and I know it.”

She walked off while saying, “Just come in and we’ll talk.”

Echo waited behind the door until the man stepped inside and half-turned. Echo smashed a Sony Playstation against the left side of Marco’s face.

Marco’s knees buckled and he hit the floor face first.

Broderick screamed like a girl.

Echo pointed at Elaine. “Shut him up.”

He wasn’t sure what the boy was screaming for – the total loss of his Playstation or his unconscious dad. Echo dragged Marco a few feet so that the front door could be closed.

Bernard Hill looked up from inside Marco’s car when he thought he heard a scream. No, he was sure he’d heard one, so he lowered the volume on the mp3 player and went for his handgun.

Elaine issued a few threats to get her son quiet and it worked.

Echo slammed the front door then began looking through the door’s peephole. He saw a man getting out of the Mustang with one hand behind his back.

Bernard barely closed the car door then crept up the side of the house to listen.

Echo eased over to the side window and peeked through the curtains. He could see part of the black man’s head but didn’t like the fact that a neighboring house was only 24 feet away. He had to think of something.

Elaine and her son kept watching Echo’s movements as well as Marco’s stillness. She knew Marco would never forgive her for setting him up, even though the child’s safety was a driving factor.

Echo smiled. He had it now. He said, “Mr. Marco Allen, I’m Special Agent Kyle McKnight of the FBI, and this is my partner, Agent Luke Friedman.”

Elaine wondered why the man was talking to Marco, who was still unconscious, while peeking out the window with a gun in his hand.

Echo said, “You’re under arrest for distribution of narcotics, possession of a firearm, and murder.”

Bernard eased away from the side of the house, cut across the neighbor’s front yard, and sprinted out of sight.

Echo looked back at Marco then said to Elaine, “I gotta make sure he can’t run again when he wakes up.” He aimed the silenced gun at Marco’s ass and shot him in the right buttock.

Marco twitched then groaned loudly as he reached for his hip.

When Broderick started crying again, Echo said, “If you don’t stop all that crying, I’mma shoot your momma in her ass, too. Now what’s up?”

The boy sucked it up quickly and was dead silent. He saw the blood staining his dad’s jeans and running from his nose.
